Flight Simulator Journey
Berlin Tegel to Singapore Changi in an JMB VL-3
Inspired by one of my colleagues undertaking an interresting endeavour I’ve decided to start a similar (however slightly less challenging) endeavour in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
I want to travel from Berlin Tegel to Singapore Changi in an JMB VL-3.
The JMB VL-3 has a cruising speed of 130 knots and a range of 690 nautical miles. In comparison to Tom’s choice of a Cessna 152 these are only marginally larger numbers, so this too, will take a long while. However the plane is more modern so it might prove to be a bit less hard.
I have taken off from Tegel on 2020-11-08 at around 11:30, since the last plane frome the real-world Tegel took off at 15:00 that day.
The rules for my journey are:
- I will only use instruments in the plane’s cockpit.
- Online maps that do not show the plane’s location are allowed.
- No assistance turned on within Flight Simulator - with the exception of taxi ribbon1.
- No AI control.
- Outside cockpit view can only be used for sightseeing/entertainment purposes - no manoeuvering while in this view.
- If I crash, the flight must restart from the last place I was safely on the ground.
- If I have to land outside an airfield, the next flight must start from the nearest airfield, land where I landed, and then resume.
- Each flight must begin where the last flight ended, with the aircraft’s engine off.
It is worth noting that I, too, know almost nothing about flying planes, so this should be… fun?
If you are interrested in watching me trying to pilot an airplane: I will be streaming the flights on twitch! (Wich I have never done before, so that will be fun too!) If you want to co-pilot message me on twitter or mastodon.
Progress
I will update the progress and plan for my journey on this map!

Quoting Tom’s page here: “Taxi ribbon is turned on because the alternative would be to load up and print out diagrams of every airport in the world that I intend to land at, and I’m trying to have some fun here.” ↩
